Peer Instruction Method
“Peer Instruction actively engages the students in their own learning. Carefully chosen questions (ConcepTests give students the opportunity to discover and correct their misunderstandings of the material, and, in the process, learn the key ideas of physics from one another”.

One of the papers to be presented in the symposium is entitled: “The Impact and Effectiveness of E-learning on Teaching and Learning” by Riah and yours truly. The symposium will be held in Al Musanna College of Technology Auditorium on May 7, 2012.
Here is the abstract of the paper:
”The Impact and Effectiveness of E-Learning on Teaching and Learning”
by Riah E. and Jhonna S.
This paper provides an indication of the effectiveness and impact of E-Learning on teaching and learning of undergraduate courses on Information Technology and English Language and Communication at Al Musanna College of Technology. Teachers (n = 70) and students (n = 162) experiences were evaluated by utilizing mixed methodology through online surveys. The study revealed that teachers and students have fluctuating levels of agreement in relation to five criteria of effectiveness. Teachers scored remarkably higher in relation to Content Quality, Collaboration, and System Quality while students rated Assessment, Collaboration, System Quality, and Technical Support at a satisfactory level. E-learning had a positive impact on teaching and learning styles; thus, teachers and students considered E-Learning to be an effective tool to enhance the knowledge acquisition skills.
LAPTOPS IN THE CLASSROOM
Semester 2 2011-2012 just ended and I can say it was one of the great semesters I ever had because for the first time in my formal logic class, the presentation PowerPoint slides, creativity and research skills of my students were very impressive. I guess, maybe my motivation and encouragement that I gave to them was effective. Or maybe I just have good students this semester. I think it’s the combination of both.
Most of my students brought their laptops for their presentation, then it gave me an idea, for next semester why not utilize these laptops in the classroom, their will be once a week schedule for having laptops in the classroom. I’ll prepare an interesting activities that would need to use their laptops, so that the class would be more engaging and somehow just the idea of flipping the classroom from traditional classroom setting.
Then today luckily, I happened to click one of the link in one of my posts last year:
Center for Research on Learning and Teaching
Then I saw the link for the paper of Laptops in the classrooms: research and best practices, and here’s the link:
Laptops in the classroom paper
I encourage all teachers to try to look on this and may consider this in their teaching strategies.
I just hope that my flipping the classroom plan for next semester would be a success…
Teaching with Technology…

Best Practices in Teaching And Learning
Keller’s ARCS Model of Motivation
How to motivate students? good question… a good answer for that would be applying Keller’s ARCS model of Motivation.
Keller suggested that the ARCS conditions occur as a sequential process:
- Gain the student’s attention first
- Then help the student see the relevance of the instruction to his/her life
- Assist the student’s confidence in their own abilities to experience success at challenging tasks. Finally, support the student’s sense of satisfaction with applying or use the new knowledge or skill in meaningful ways.
A- Attention (Course content can activate the student’s interest)
R – Relevance (Course content will emphasize relevance to the students, the course is meaningful to the students)
C – Confidence (Providing guidance, mentoring and support to build student’s confidence)
S – Satisfaction (When students are confident, satisfaction would follow. Helping students to have that feeling of sense of achievement)
